ARTISTS
Turnaround Artists are acclaimed, creative professionals who adopt partner schools over the length of the program. They work directly with students and teachers, engage parents and school communities, and highlight the positive impact of the arts on school transformation.
John Lloyd Young is an actor and singer. He originated the role of “Frankie Valli” in the Broadway hit Jersey Boys from 2005 to 2007, and reprised that role in 2013. He has also held lead roles in Spring Awakening, The Chosen, and Les Miserables. He has performed in venues across the country and has had guest appearances on a number of television shows, including Glee in 2009 and Vegas in 2013. Mr. Young won a Tony award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2006 for his work in Jersey Boys, and received Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World awards. He has been involved with charitable organizations such as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, AIDS Project Los Angeles, amfAR, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the United Service Organization. Mr. Young received a BA in Theatre Arts from Brown University. _Mr. Young was appointed by President Obama to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2013 as a Turnaround Artist.

Kalpen Suresh Modi is an actor, writer, and producer. From 2009 to 2011, he was an Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement at the White House, serving as liaison to Young Americans, the Arts, and Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Before joining the White House, Mr. Modi worked as an artist and actor in Los Angeles and New York, and was also an Adjunct Lecturer in Asian American Studies, Film Studies, and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Obama for America National Arts Policy Committee in 2008 and as a National Campaign Co-Chair in 2012. Mr. Modi received a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles. _Mr. Modi was appointed by President Obama to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2013,

The Silk Road Ensemble gathers passionate and distinguished performers and composers from more than 20 countries. The Ensemble was formed in 2000 under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma, as a way of bringing together innovative performers and composers representing traditions from around the world, and to explore musical crossroads. With an experimental and democratic approach to creating new music, the collaborative cross-cultural group has been called “vibrant and virtuosic” by the Wall Street Journal, “one of the 21st century’s great ensembles” by the Vancouver Sun, and a “roving musical laboratory without walls” by the Boston Globe. The Silk Road Ensemble has performed to critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe, and North America and has recorded five albums.
